Arulmigu | What is the meaning of the Tamil word ‘Arulmigu ?

Arulmigu

The Tamil word “Arulmigu” is a title or honorific that is commonly used in South India to refer to a Hindu temple or deity. It is a combination of two words: “Arul”, which means grace or blessings, and “migu”, which means abundant or full. Together, “Arulmigu” can be translated to mean “the one who is full of grace” or “the one who bestows abundant blessings”. It is often used as a prefix to the name of a Hindu deity or temple, such as “Arulmigu Meenakshi Amman Temple” or “Arulmigu Murugan”.

The word “Arul” in Tamil signifies kindness, empathy, and benevolence. In this context, “Arul” can be interpreted as “grace.” “Migu” means “a lot” or “abundant,” and in this context, it can be translated to “infinite.” Therefore, the term “Arulmigu” means “with infinite grace.” In Tamil Nadu, all temples dedicated to the Hindu gods and goddesses, such as Pillaiyar, Murugan, Siva, Vishnu, Parvathi, Lakshmi, and Saraswati, among others, prefix “Arulmigu” before their names. This is because it is believed that these deities bestow their boundless grace upon their devotees

The Arulmigu Manneaswarar Temple, situated in Annur, Tamil Nadu, is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its name is derived from the Presiding deity, which is also known as Annewsarar or Manneaswarar. According to local legends, Lord Shiva blessed a tribal leader named Annie, who was then forgiven by the deity, resulting in the two proposed etymologies of the temple’s name.
