According to Buddhist belief, Gautama Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal, in around 563-483 BCE. Archaeologists from Durham University in Nepal have found evidence of a structure dating back to the sixth century BCE at the Buddha’s birthplace using radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence techniques.

The exact date of Buddha’s birthday varies each year in the Western Gregorian calendar and is determined by the Asian lunisolar calendars. Typically, the celebration falls in April or May, although in leap years, it can be celebrated in June.

In South and Southeast Asia, Buddha’s birth is observed as a part of Vesak, which is a festival that also commemorates the Buddha’s enlightenment (on the full moon day) and death. In East Asia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, the awakening and death of the Buddha are celebrated as separate holidays.

Buddha’s Birthday is celebrated on different dates depending on the region and the calendar followed. In general, it is based on the Asian lunisolar calendars and is primarily celebrated during the Baisakh month of the Buddhist calendar and the Bikram Sambat Hindu calendar. This is why it is commonly referred to as Vesak.

In India and Nepal, where the Historical Buddha lived, it is celebrated on the full moon day of the Vaisakha month of the Buddhist calendar.

In Theravada countries following the Buddhist calendar, it typically falls on the full moon Uposatha day, which is usually in the 5th or 6th lunar month. In China, Korea, Vietnam, and the Philippines, it is celebrated on the eighth day of the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. In Tibet, it falls on the 7th day of the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar.
