Jagaddhatri, derived from the Sanskrit words “Jagat” (world) and “Dhatri” (protector), is a form of the goddess Durga. She is depicted with four arms, three eyes, and a radiant blood-red complexion. The origins of Jagaddhatri’s worship in Hinduism remain a mystery. However, references to her reverence can be found in ancient texts such as the Shakta Tantras, Uttara Kamakhya Tantra, Bhavishya Purana, and scriptures related to Durga worship. The Upanishads also mention her as Hemavati, assuming the form of Jagaddhatri. Thus, she holds an important place in the divine pantheon.

The festival dedicated to Jagaddhatri, known as Jagaddhatri Puja, is observed with great fervor, especially during Kartik Shukla Navami. West Bengal and Bihar, particularly in Madhubani, are regions where she is highly venerated. Chandannagar and its surrounding areas are renowned for the grand celebrations of Jagaddhatri Puja.

It is believed that Sarada Devi, the divine consort of Ramakrishna, played a crucial role in popularizing and initiating the festivities of Jagaddhatri Puja within the Ramakrishna Mission. Firm in her belief in God’s reincarnation, she proclaimed and introduced the celebration of this festival. Since then, the festival has become integral to the traditions observed in all Ramakrishna Mission centers worldwide.

Jagaddhatri, also known as Jagad-Khatri, meaning “the sustainer of the world,” is a manifestation of the Hindu goddess Parvati. She is worshipped in the states of West Bengal and Odisha in India. The rituals and observances associated with Jagaddhatri Puja have evolved from tantric traditions. She is regarded as a symbol of existence beyond creation and destruction, representing the principles of Rajas (activity) and Tamas (inertia).
