History of Statue Making

According to the Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa, there is a story of how Lord Krishna, in front of his devoted follower King Indradyumna, created an order to build his statue. This statue was to be made using a wooden log that had washed ashore on the Puri beach. The King searched for a suitable woodcarver to create the statue but could not find anyone.

One day, an old, mysterious Brahmin woodcarver appeared before the King and offered to create the statue. The woodcarver took several days to create the statue and advised the King that no one should disturb his work during the statue’s creation time. The work began through a closed door, and the King and queen became highly interested in the statue’s creation.

Every day, they went to the closed door and heard digging from inside. After 6-7 days, the sound stopped when the King stood outside. The queen, who was curious and enthusiastic, opened the door and went inside. She saw that the statue was incomplete, and the woodcarver had disappeared.

The mysterious woodcarver was the divine sculptor Viswakarma. He was disappointed when the King heard that the statue’s hand and foot had yet to be made. This incident teaches us to be patient and have faith in the divine powers. Sometimes, things may not go as planned, but if we remain steadfast in our beliefs and trust the higher powers, everything will fall into place.
