What is the Nila Puja tradition?

The Nila Puja tradition commemorates the marriage of Lord Shiva and Nilabati Parmeshwari, who was reborn as the daughter of King Bilvabhanu after Sati’s self-immolation. In a worldly ceremony, King Bilvabhanu married Nilabati to Lord Shiva, who was mesmerized by her beauty in her house before she immersed herself in flowers in water, signifying her death.

A statue of Nila, made from neem or apple tree wood, is brought down from the mandapa before Chaitra Sankranti. Adhibash is held the day before the Nila Puja, which invites all the gods for the marriage ceremony, where they are offered a bhoj or feast of fried fish with a lentil paste.

During the Nila Puja, Nila is bathed in Ganges water and adorned with new red and white clothes. At least seven houses visit Nila for blessings while he is carried around the village. Nila Sannyasis also wear the same red dresses during the Nila Puja festival.
