Rath Yatra Full Details

Rath Yatra or Rath Dutiya is one of the significant Hindu festivals celebrated in Ashadha. This festival is celebrated enthusiastically in India’s Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Bangladesh. In addition, it is now celebrated worldwide due to the extensive promotion by ISKCON. This festival is organized to remember Lord Krishna’s return to Vrindavan after a long separation. The most famous Rath Yatra in India is held at the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha.

The Mahishadal in East Medinipur, the Mahesh Rath Yatra in Shrirampur, the Rath of Vrindavan Chandra Math in Guptaipara, Kolkata’s Rath, and ISKCON’s Rath and Dharmarai Jagannath Rath in Bangladesh are also well-known.

Various fairs are organized in different places during the Rath Yatra. In West Bengal, the tradition of yatra pala (palanquin-bearers) is prevalent during the Rath Yatra.

Prominent figures such as Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, his wife Ma Sarada Devi, playwright Girish Chandra Ghosh, and literary giant Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay used to come and witness the famous Rath Yatra festival. Sri Ramakrishna used to say that the yatra pala taught people essential lessons.

History of Statue Making

According to the Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa, there is a story of how Lord Krishna, in front of his devoted follower King Indradyumna, created an order to build his statue. This statue was to be made using a wooden log that had washed ashore on the Puri beach. The King searched for a suitable woodcarver to create the statue but could not find anyone.

One day, an old, mysterious Brahmin woodcarver appeared before the King and offered to create the statue. The woodcarver took several days to create the statue and advised the King that no one should disturb his work during the statue’s creation time. The work began through a closed door, and the King and queen became highly interested in the statue’s creation.

Every day, they went to the closed door and heard digging from inside. After 6-7 days, the sound stopped when the King stood outside. The queen, who was curious and enthusiastic, opened the door and went inside. She saw that the statue was incomplete, and the woodcarver had disappeared.

The mysterious woodcarver was the divine sculptor Viswakarma. He was disappointed when the King heard that the statue’s hand and foot had yet to be made. This incident teaches us to be patient and have faith in the divine powers. Sometimes, things may not go as planned, but if we remain steadfast in our beliefs and trust the higher powers, everything will fall into place.
